Rome Breakfast Guide

The best breakfast spots in Rome

Although Italians aren’t fond of big breakfasts, a classic Roman breakfast is simple and sweet: a coffee or creamy cappuccino with a freshly baked cornetto, usually enjoyed standing at the bar rather than lingering over the table. So, when in Rome, do as the locals do. And if a pastry and coffee won’t suffice, the city is also full of cafés and bars serving everything from historic maritozzi to fresh juices and smoothies.

Here’s our list of the best places to have breakfast in Rome.

Looking for a fuller, sit-down affair with eggs and international dishes? Head to our guide to the best brunch in Rome instead.

Gelateria Cremilla

Discover Italian excellence one scoop at a time

Every bite becomes a real journey through Italy and the world, thanks to various gelato flavours and regional pastries. Cremilla tells us a story of local farmers and food artisans committed to creating a product where taste and quality meet naturally.

Strategically located almost halfway between Castel Sant Angelo and San Peter’s Basilica, just a few meters away from Borgo Pio, this ice cream parlour is the perfect spot for enjoying truly authentic ice cream without falling into a “tourist trap”.

You won’t need to get lost in the city’s narrow and cobbled streets to find real Italian products: Cremilla gives you a chance to taste a deliciously creamy and fresh ice cream while you are walking in the lively area around Castel Sant Angelo, visiting the city’s main hotspots.

The ice cream shop was opened in 2018 and it managed to thrive through the pandemic, constantly adapting to the costumer’s needs. Besides a great selection of ice cream, Cremilla offers fresh seasonal juices, crepes – either plain or chocolate, flavoured waffles, pancakes, smoothies, milkshakes and organic yoghurt.

At Cremilla, you can find the traditional Sicilian cannoli (a crunchy fried wafer filled with sheep’s ricotta cream) and brioches. Or, to fight the summer heat, a refreshing crunchy granita can be a great choice.

When you order a gelato in Rome expect to be asked quite a few questions. As it is better to be prepared, let’s see what this is about.

Apart from the classic choice between cone or cup, don’t be surprised if the gelataio/a will also ask if you want melted chocolate (white chocolate or gianduja) at the bottom of the cone or whipped cream on top. It is one of the free, little, precious joys of eating ice cream in Italy.

Old school flavours such as stracciatella and crema alternate with other seasonal tastes depending on the availability of the product and the creativity of the staff.  We recommend trying brand-new flavours such as mint and liquorice, although the salted caramel with crunchy almonds is hard to pass up.

Fruit flavoured gelato is made using more than 50% seasonal fresh fruit delivered daily, while cream flavoured ones are made only with local organic milk and eggs. For its gelato, Cremilla only uses Sicilian carob flour as natural thickener in order to obtain a free of artificial additive flavour.

The gelato is mixed continuously in the kitchen lab so that it feels real, swift, and fresh at every bite. Most products are made on-site daily – there’s even a glass panel on the floor so that you can see the kitchen in action.

Unlike other gelaterie where the seating area can be quite limited, Cremilla, thanks to an inclusive interior design, invites visitors to take a seat and enjoy a moment of pure happiness.

Italian Sunday brunch is back at TH Roma Carpegna Palace

An authentic, convivial Sunday lunch at TH Carpegna Palace Hotel’s Restaurant 481

Not far from the city of the Vatican there is a fairy-tale place, refined, elegant, romantic and surrounded by peace and greenery. We are talking about the TH Rome Carpegna Palace Hotel. This is a place for gentlemen and ladies, where elegance and sophistication meet the simplicity and sincerity of Italian menus, with products of the highest quality, native to this rich and varied land.

TH ROMA 481 restaurant

Restaurant 481 is one of the options offered by the establishment, along with the main restaurant, the outdoor bar, set in the picturesque setting of the courtyard patio, and finally a beautiful terrace that complements Restaurant 481.

The main restaurant, with its large rooms and beautiful exedras, is an ideal venue for receptions and gala dinners. Restaurant 481 is an exclusive restaurant that can seat 60 people with an a la carte menu.  Both offer a TH Resorts-style gastronomic line-up, adapted to a graceful setting designed to satisfy a sophisticated clientele.

sunday-brunch-rome-th-resort-villa-carpegna

Alongside its à la carte menu, 481 at TH Roma has introduced a new weekly ritual starting in February: a Sunday buffet brunch, open to everyone, including locals. Designed as a true return to the classic Italian Sunday lunch, it is all about familiar flavours, a relaxed pace, and time shared around the table, with rotating themed editions inspired by Lazio’s regional traditions and live show cooking that turns brunch into an experience.

Expect local cured meats and cheeses, from Ariccia IGP porchetta and guanciale from the Lepini Mountains to Lazio pecorini and oven-baked Roman ricotta, plus iconic sides like carciofi alla romana, puntarelle, and sautéed chicory. In the dining room, Roman favourites such as cacio e pepe, amatriciana, and gnocchi al pomodoro are prepared live, followed by comforting main courses and classic desserts.

The brunch costs €38 per person and €23 for children aged 3 to 12.

Finally, after a great brunch, guests can end Sunday by taking advantage of the hotel’s other amenities, such as the spa and wellness center, just to put the icing on the cake.
